The Nuclear Waste Management Club (Directory & Articles) Web Site Reason for this web site: to assist in informing the public of current progress in nuclear waste management. What is Nuclear Waste? Nuclear Waste (also known as Radioactive Waste) is any waste type containing radioactive chemical elements that does not have a practical purpose. It is sometimes the product of a nuclear process, such as nuclear fusion (traditional power stations etc) and may include waste from fission (experimental research). The majority of radioactive waste is "low-level waste", meaning it has low levels of radioactivity per mass or volume, and is not from a nuclear process as in radioactive hospital waste. What is Nuclear Waste Management? It is the management of Nuclear Waste to prevent harm to the environment, or injury. Nuclear Waste Management is split into two primary functions. The first is storage of nuclear waste (often above ground), and the disposal of low-level and also at times high-level nuclear waste. Disposal of nuclear waste is where the intention is to permanently store the waste for the duration of its nuclear activity, such that it is rendered harmless in deep repositories. Both types are specialist waste management functions.
